The Ginyu Saga (also known as the Captain Ginyu Saga) is the name for the roughly the middle third of the much larger Freeza Saga in Dragon Ball Z, according to FUNimation's naming conventions for the English language anime. It immediately follows the Namek Saga and is followed by the Freeza Saga.

Strictly speaking, the Ginyu Saga should start several episodes before it does. The separation between the Namek and Ginyu sagas was due to a change in the dubbing team (from Ocean Group to FUNimation themselves) and also marks the point where the editing starts to conform to the much more lenient standards of Cartoon Network. When speaking of the manga, most fans put the start of the saga at the arrival of the Ginyu Force.

All major action in the Ginyu Saga takes place on the Planet Namek.

Plot Summary

Continuing from where the Namek Saga left off, the well-rounded Jeice and the incredibly fast Burter attack Goku after he defeated (but not killed) Recoome. He defeats them with ease as well. Vegeta does what Goku could not, and kills the unconscious Burter and Recoome. Goku says that they should be shown mercy like Vegeta was, but Vegeta says that they are warriors and will do anything to win. Goku lets Jeice escape and that does prove to be a mistake, because he brings back the powerful Captain Ginyu to join the battle. Ginyu and Goku begin the fight, but they are both holding back the bulk of their powers. When Ginyu makes Goku perform his Kaio-ken technique, Ginyu realizes that Goku is way stronger than he is so he uses his trump card...he switches bodies with Goku after stabbing himself in the chest.

Meanwhile, Krillin and Gohan go to Frieza's ship to find the Dragon Balls so they can summon the Namekian dragon. Vegeta catches up with them and hides so they can find the balls for him. But before they can Jeice and Ginyu (in Goku's body) arrive on the scene. Not knowing about the change Krillin and Gohan come to greet him. Krillin sences that something isn't right about this "Goku" comes the conclusion that he is infact an imposter. They begin to fight.

Soon Goku (in Ginyu's body) arrives and convinces Krillin and Gohan that they can defeat Ginyu because he isn't used to Goku's body yet. They almost succeed but Jeice jumps in to help. Vegeta comes out of hiding to take on Jeice and easily kills him. Tired of Goku's body, Ginyu decides to switch bodies again. Only this time with Vegeta. When he is about to make the switch Goku jumps into the beam's range at the last second and gets his body back. Ginyu tries again but Goku throws a frog into the beams path. Before anyone knows it Ginyu is trapped inside of the body of a frog.

Sadly, Goku was hurt badly. He is put in the rejuvenation chamber on Frieza's ship. The gang also takes the Dragon Balls. While this is happening however, Freeza has gone to see the elder Namek. He has also defeated the elder's bodyguard, Nail.
