Garden Township is a township located in Delta County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 817.
Communities
- The Village of Garden is located within the township.
- Garden Corners is an unincorporated community in the township at the northeast of the Big Bay de Noc at Template:Coor dms. It is on U.S. Highway 2 about 16 miles west of Manistique. It is also the northern terminus of Michigan State Highway 183 which connect with Garden, nine miles to the south and with Fayette, about 17 miles to the south.
- Isabella is an unincorporated community about four miles west of Garden Corners on US 2 at Template:Coor dms.
Geography
The township occupies the northern portion of the Garden Peninsula, with the Big Bay de Noc, which opens onto the Bay of Green Bay, on the west and Lake Michigan on the east. The township also extends about 16 miles northward along the entire eastern boundary between Delta County and Schoolcraft County to the northern boundary of Delta with Schoolcraft.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 477.6 km² (184.4 mi²). 414.2 km² (159.9 mi²) of it is land and 63.4 km² (24.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 13.27% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 817 people, 348 households, and 249 families residing in the township. The population density is 2.0/km² (5.1/mi²). There are 654 housing units at an average density of 1.6/km² (4.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 88.25% White, 0.12% African American, 5.75% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 5.51% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 348 households out of which 24.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.9% are married couples living together, 5.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% are non-families. 24.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.74.
In the township the population is spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 3.1% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 31.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 106.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.8 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $37,083, and the median income for a family is $40,313. Males have a median income of $34,750 versus $29,063 for females. The per capita income for the township is $20,445. 9.1% of the population and 5.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.9% of those under the age of 18 and 9.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
