Emperor Xian of Han China

zh:汉献帝 ja:献帝 (漢) Format of naming convention in English is under discussion at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Chinese).

Emperor Xian of Han China, trad. ch. 漢獻帝;, sim. ch. 漢献帝, py. hn xan d, wg. Han Hsien-ti, (181-234) was last emperor of the Chinese Han Dynasty. He abdicated in favor of Cao Pi and was given the title of Duke of Shanyang ("Shanyang gong").

Emperor Xian was the son of Emperor Ling and was the brother of Emperor Shao. He came to the throne after he met Dong Zhuo in 189 AD, when Dong Zhuo removed Emperor Shao. This act was seen as a sign to all the other lords that he was in full control of the empire. However after Dong Zhuo died in 192 AD, Emperor Xian was sought by all the other lords and hence Xian was forced to flee. Xian soon came under the control of Cao Cao in 196 AD and though Cao Cao wanted nothing more than to remove Xian, Cao Cao dare not declare himself emperor. By now Xian was only emperor in name and in 220 AD, the Han dynasty was finally overthrown by Cao Cao's son Cao Pi, ending more than 400 years of Han dynastic rule and ushering in the era of the Three Kingdoms.

Although Xian was demoted to a rank of nobility (Duke of Shanyang), he lived in comfort and enjoyed preferential treatments. Xian died in 234 AD, 14 years after the fall of his dynasty. He was 53.
