XXX, pronounced "Triple X", is a 2002 action movie starring Vin Diesel. Diesel stars as Xander Cage, an extreme sports star who is recruited by a National Security Agency agent, played by Samuel L. Jackson, to infiltrate an international anti-government group of European criminals named Anarchy 99. Anarchy 99 formed in the early 90's and consists of deceipted former Russian soldiers now acting as businessmen. Their main activity besides international underground and illegal business consists of the celebration of orgiastic parties. Anarchy 99 acts across the whole world while being based in Prague in the Czech Republic and plans to unleash a bio-weapon submarine known as the Ahab. XXX was marketed as a James Bond style film for the new millennium and featured similar gadgetry, international schemes and intrigues, villain-sponsored take-over-the-world schemes backed up by doomsday devices, a female co-star / love interest, and outrageous stunts (as Roger Ebert put it, "Why blow up two cars when you can blow up twenty?").
XXX was written by Rich Wilkes, directed by Rob Cohen (who also directed Diesel in 2001's The Fast and the Furious), and produced by Neal H. Moritz for Revolution Studios. Stuntperson Harry L. O'Connor was killed in an accident during filming.
A sequel was released in 2005, titled XXX: State of the Union, starring rap artist/actor Ice Cube and Willem Dafoe.
Plot Summary
Vin Diesel stars as Xander "XXX" Cage, the notorious underground thrill seeker who until now has been deemed untouchable by the law. NSA Agent Gibbons (played by Samuel L. Jackson) forces XXX to cooperate with the government to infiltrate an underground Russian crime ring and avoid going to prison. Betting XXX can succeed where other conventional spies have failed, Gibbons sends XXX to enter this world of crime undetected, using his natural athletic prowess and a whole lot of attitude. Enlisted for a dangerous covert mission, he must combat a clever, organized, and ruthless enemy far beyond the scope of his experience.
