Woodlawn is a census-designated place located in Baltimore County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 36,079. It is best known as the home of the Social Security Administration.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 24.9 km² (9.6 mi²). 24.9 km² (9.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 36,079 people, 13,936 households, and 9,281 families residing in the community. The population density is 1,451.1/km² (3,758.6/mi²). There are 14,547 housing units at an average density of 585.1/km² (1,515.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 38.39% White, 51.50% African American, 0.30% Native American, 6.22% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.06% from other races, and 2.48% from two or more races. 2.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,936 households out of which 33.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% are married couples living together, 18.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% are non-families. 27.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.13.

The community's age distribution is: 26.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 33.1% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.0 males.

The median income for a household in the community is $48,878, and the median income for a family is $54,490. Males have a median income of $36,789 versus $31,242 for females. The per capita income for the community is $21,710. 6.3% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
