Westport is a town located in Essex County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,362.

History
The town was founded by William Gilliland, whom also established the neighboring towns of Elizabethtown and Willsboro. He originally called the village Bessboro after his daughter.
The Town of Westport was founded in 1815 from part of the Town of Elizabettown. The Village of Westport in this town was abolished in 1992.
Geography
The east town line is formed by Lake Champlain and the border of Vermont. The town is inside the Adirondack State Park.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 173.2 km² (66.9 mi²). 151.3 km² (58.4 mi²) of it is land and 21.9 km² (8.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 12.65% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,362 people, 593 households, and 381 families residing in the town. The population density is 9.0/km² (23.3/mi²). There are 887 housing units at an average density of 5.9/km² (15.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.65% White, 0.15% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.73% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 593 households out of which 25.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% are married couples living together, 6.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% are non-families. 29.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.83.
In the town the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 3.7% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 29.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 96.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $40,000, and the median income for a family is $49,917. Males have a median income of $31,042 versus $26,550 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,063. 7.7% of the population and 5.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.0% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
