Elizabethtown, New York

Elizabethtown is a town located in Essex County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,315. The county seat of Essex County6 is a hamlet also called Elizabethtown. The name is derived from Elizabeth Gilliland, the wife of an early settler.

The Town of Elizabethtown is in the east-central part of the county.

History

The Town of Elizabethtown was established in 1798 from the Town of Crown Point. The community of Elizabethtown in this town became the county seat, succeeding a location in the Town of Essex.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 215.2 km² (83.1 mi²). 211.6 km² (81.7 mi²) of it is land and 3.6 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.68% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,315 people, 497 households, and 318 families residing in the town. The population density is 6.2/km² (16.1/mi²). There are 794 housing units at an average density of 3.8/km² (9.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.49% White, 0.68% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 0.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 497 households out of which 30.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 24.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 94.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $32,244, and the median income for a family is $44,531. Males have a median income of $28,295 versus $23,594 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,059. 15.7% of the population and 9.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.8% of those under the age of 18 and 10.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
