Van Etten is a town located in Chemung County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,518.
The Town of Van Etten was formed in 1854 from the Town of Cayuta, which became part of Schuyler County, New York. Within the town there is a village also called Van Etten.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 107.7 km² (41.6 mi²). 107.6 km² (41.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.02% is water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,518 people, 596 households, and 420 families residing in the town. The population density is 14.1/km² (36.5/mi²). There are 679 housing units at an average density of 6.3/km² (16.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.55% White, 0.26% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 0.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 596 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.3% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% are non-families. 24.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 2.99.
