Cayuta is a town located in Schuyler County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 545.
The Town of Cayuta occupies the southeast corner of the county.

History
The town was created from part of the Town of Spencer (Tioga County) in 1824. The size was increased in 1854 by the addition of parts of two other towns. The first pioneers arrived around 1798 near the community of Cayuta.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 52.7 km² (20.3 mi²). 52.7 km² (20.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 545 people, 212 households, and 161 families residing in the town. The population density is 10.4/km² (26.8/mi²). There are 233 housing units at an average density of 4.4/km² (11.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.15% White, 1.10% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.55% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. 1.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 212 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.2% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% are non-families. 17.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 2.90.
In the town the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 105.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $32,768, and the median income for a family is $35,313. Males have a median income of $27,857 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,419. 6.2% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.4% of those under the age of 18 and 9.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
