User talk:Oliver Pereira/Archive 2

I enjoy working with you Oliver. Susan Mason

Thank God you're here to explain to me what a horrible person I am. -- Zoe

This sort of talk is not productive, Zoe. -- Oliver P. 04:04 Mar 4, 2003 (UTC)

No, it isn't. It does seem, however, a touch territorial. Oliver has made no such claims to your character in his writing; he's been at pains to be polite and courteous to you, as he is with all other wikipedia users. He's even gone out of his way to apologise to you, and explain to me why I should be glad of your highly random, nonsensical criticisms. You could learn much from his conduct. The least you can do is have the good will to accept his apology. :) Birchtree 07:16 Mar 4, 2003 (UTC)

lol Susan Mason

You're right, Oliver, I'm not being cooperative. These so-called mispronunciations are SOME people's feelings as to what the pronunciatons SHOULD be. Since that is TOTALLY POV, I'm going to keep deleting anything that isn't totally NPOV. -- Zoe

See Talk:List of words of disputed pronunciation. I have been at pains to make this a NPOV list, removing all claims about what is or is not "correct" pronunciation. (If I have missed any, let me know.) Obviously the page still needs work, but just chopping everything out is hardly the way to build an article. -- Oliver P. 08:14 Mar 8, 2003 (UTC)
I deleted EVERYTHING that was POV. -- Zoe
The article is called List of words of disputed pronunciation. It just lists the disputes. It doesn't say anything about who is right. In what way is this not NPOV? You should be attacking List of words commonly mispronounced, not this one. -- Oliver P. 08:19 Mar 8, 2003 (UTC)

You are being childish. The purpose of the Wikipedia is to report the way things are, not to tell people what to do. -- Oliver P. 08:33 Mar 8, 2003 (UTC)
But you're trying to tell people what to do. -- Zoe
I'm not telling people what to do in the articles. NPOV doesn't apply to talk pages. Grow up. -- Oliver P. 08:36 Mar 8, 2003 (UTC)
No, Zoe, I'm too much of a Gentleman to tell you what I think you should do. Mkweise
Reporting the way things are is all I was ever attempting to do in the article I started: For example, that people who say "nukular" instead of "nuclear" tend to be regarded as having a rather limited command of the English language. Mkweise
My high school chemistry teacher used to say "nucular". As I said somewhere else, so does Jimmy Carter, and he's a nuclear engineer. -- Zoe
As a U.S. citizen who is in daily contact with people in other countries, I have suffered much embarassment from the follies of many of my presidents. So much so, that I at times feel the whole Boston Tea Party thing was a big mistake :-) Mkweise

Surely that should be a nukular injun-ere (that's how the great man says it!) STÓD/ÉÍRE 08:54 Mar 8, 2003 (UTC)

PS - OLLIE: your page is reaching browser limits. Time to archive, man.

You go to bed. You are in the UK, right? So it is the same as here . . . Aaaaaaagh. I've just looked out my window, realised it is sooo bright out there. I need sleep too. (I also need cigarettes. but must as I need them, I aint taking off my pyjamas and dressing to walk to the shops. No its bedtime, especially if I wanna watch some of the rugby. (Do I really, I'm suddenly thinking in a Sybill Fawlty-type voice. So I'm heading off, leaving all edit wars to my dream world. (And wars to George Bush's!) Well Oliver, if I give you a fish, you'll just smell funny and keep bugging me for more fish. ;) Yes, I added the "LIMIT=99" to prevent the unwary from asking for a million records at once and killing the machine. :) If you're brave, add your own LIMIT=(some large number) to override it. MWOO-HA-HAAA-HAAAAAA!!!! Bonan ŝancon... --Brion 06:01 Mar 10, 2003 (UTC)

Hi Oliver. That mispronunciation entry looks very interesting. I'm not going to wade into it just yet though. Sort of reading that I need to be awake for and tonight I'm in that long-hard-day-at-the-office-just-want-to-do-easy-things frame of mind. :) Going to play with some aircraft entries instead. Later. Tannin

Hi Oliver, I see the US presidential election, 2000 talk page has gone beyond 32k so cannot be entered by many people. Do you have the ability to enter it? If so, could you do an archive? If I enter the page, my browser will cut off the end of the page. BTW good guess on the name!

I am still puzzled by Susan's determination to rename the page. Personally I think the idea is bonkers. Not alone that, but as she has done on other pages, Sue's reaction to my opinions is to misrepresent them, and then argue not against by opinions but her misrepresented version of my opinions. It is really getting frustrating at this stage. This is the third time she has falsefied my opinions and then attacked her misrepresentation of them. (On the pages on lists, she stated categorically that Zoe and I wanted names alphabeticalised by first name, a complete and utter lie!) I don't know how many times I can keep trying to get through to her that the format of the page title being used is the standard format used only for titles, not for text and not as spoken, not just on wiki but in the broadcast media, print media, academic sources, etc. I've just finished reading a paper on the Iast Irish general election, called Irish General Election, 2002. That's how that sort of information is written. (Curiously, the technique of mispresenting claims and starting pointless wars over titles was something both Lir and Vera did!) Take care. STÓD/ÉÍRE 19:07 Mar 11, 2003 (UTC)

If only was that straight-forward. Taku wants no emperor of Japan to be called . . . em . . . emperor of Japan . . . even though they were emperor of Japan because they weren't called emperor of Japan . . . except by everyone outside Japan! Confused? Zundark a long time ago 'sorted' this issue, worked it all out and then when the naming conventions on monarchical titles were cleaned up named all the emperors, emperors of japan. Taku has tonight renamed them, inverted the order of the name and the word 'emperor' and banished the words 'of Japan'. Montrealais is puzzled (to put it politely), Deb was strongly opposed and I'm a but miffed because we already don't mention the word China in chinese emperor's titles. If we drop Japan, we will have piles and piles of emperors from the far east with no state listed, just names. (I shudder to look at the old Vietnamese emperors!) Unless you know your emperors, your chinese or your japanese, finding the 'right' emperor is going to be like looking for a needle in an imperial haystack. But Taku thinks putting 'of Japan' is wrong (tell that to the emperor who issues his new year greeting as 'Emperor of Japan'!) and insists it would be treating the emperor differently (???) whereas I have been trying to point out that entire monarchical world on wiki use titles, the emperor of Japan (opps) uses titles on wiki (or did til 9pm tonight) and that you could only get away with one country in the region escaping (China, where Roadrunner has stood guard for months saying keep titles of my emperors!). One lot of titleless emperors - we can cope. 2 lots in the far east, each with more emperors than George Bush has brain cells - potential chaos (I mean with the emperors, not Bush's alleged brain (nice NPOV answer there)). But Roadrunner says - don't come near Chinese emperors with a title, while Taku says 'that isn't fair. Why should we be different? I don't understand . . . why . . . I don't understand. . . that's isn't fair . . . etc etc. Oh GOD!!!! HELP ME!!! I should let Deb sort this out. Or set Susan Mason lose on them (sorree!) STÓD/ÉÍRE 06:16 Mar 12, 2003 (UTC)

Ah... well... erm... no, I'm not going to think about it... I'm going to bed. Oiche mhaith! :) -- Oliver P. 06:24 Mar 12, 2003 (UTC)

Re: deletion log not yet including restorations. Yup, it's true, I never got around to adding restorations to the log. Oops! I'll try to work that in. --Brion 21:17 Mar 16, 2003 (UTC)

Oliver: my defence of List of words commonly mispronounced was largely motivated by a wish not to see contributors jumped on for NPOV before they had had a chance to knock the entry into decent shape. I had no particular wish to work on it myself. (Mind you, I was damned if I was going to let some ignorant Yanks tell me that mutilating the name of a city I lived and worked in for ten years was "OK"!) :) A little later I got a great laugh and a graphic illustration of the confusing nature of trying to write out pronunciations when someone posted links to sound files which proved my exact point but they said proved their exact point - i.e., we were arguing about nothing at all!

OK, there are a couple of "proper" ways to write the damn things out, but they are (a) too damn difficult to start learning at my age, and (b) probably impossible to do in HTML anyway.

Anyway, it seems that no-one is interested in working on it and that it is destined to remain forever a crappy stub. In that case, it might as well go. (Well, it's not doing any harm, but I won't shed any tears or object to its deletion unless someone suddenly pops up and says I really want to work on this and make it into something decent.

Also, I said that I would take a look at the new entry of yours that you mentioned on my talk page. I will - but not tonight, because it's after 2:00AM here! Cheers -- Tannin

I answered you at Image:Australia.jpg (awfully slow right now - that's my last edit I think). I just saw you were now a sysop, so I'll ask *you* to delete the pict - but, in a couple of days. :-). User:Anthere

Argh, I replied to this several minutes ago, but my browser seems to have eaten what I wrote! My Internet connection is doing evil things, and if it doesn't start behaving itself again I might have to give up what I'm doing and go to bed with several double redirects and things not sorted out... :( But anyway, thanks for your reply. I just hope you don't get into trouble for uploading an image that we can't use! :) And yes, I am now a sysop. I don't really know why I asked to be one; it just seemed like a good idea at the time. :) So okay, I'll come back in a couple of days to delete the picture. -- Oliver P. 20:27 Apr 1, 2003 (UTC)
Hello. I have copy pasted the template (yes, not moved it) in the article Arabian Desert and East Sahero-Arabian xeric shrublands. Yes, it is a valid article. It is just that I don't think it is the proper layout yet. Thanks Ant

Dear Oliver: Hi! How are you? Me Im fine according to the doctor yesterday, and besides I just came from having a chocolate italian ice, a very welcomed drink here in the desert!!

Thanks for writing on my page your observations about my Walter Mercado comments. I think homosexuality is fine, matter of fact Im bisexual. But Mercado does see it as a shameful thing apparently: He lived with a guy in the 1990's and he has mannerisms, but he still publicly denies being homosexual. Thats why I thought it wouldnt look like a fan page if I talked about his alleged homosexuality.

But when it's all said and done I really do like the page the way it is now, thats why I havent tried to bring up the issue anymore.

Well its time for me to take off. Im thinking about writing an article on Cigar Aficionado. Interesting magazine in my opinion. Talking of hich, your opinions and comments are always very welcome in my talk page I like reading from decent folks like you and Mav and Zoe, who has been real good to me from about October on..LOL JK I like him/her a lot too.

Thanks and God bless you!

Sincerely yours, Antonio Shotgun Albarado Martin

ps: how do you like my nicknames??

Hey Great job on the Tim Duncan page..thanks!

My nicknames..I dont know Im the type of person who gets on top of cars and jumps on them or would go to a restaurant with a wig and a dress, I do things in the spur of the moment, so I guess my nicknames are like a reflection of that, as well as a way of mine to try to amuse wikipedians and keep things a little light. :) Besides, since Im wacky and crazy and stuff, they reflect a part of me. That Shotgun Albarado I copied it from a 1970's world Jr Middleweight champion boxer, Oscar Albarado, and I really like his nickname I guess...

Thanks and God bless you!!

Sincerely yours, Antonio Desire Martin

Thanks, I'm glad you're happy with the Tim Duncan page now. And thanks for explaining the nicknames. To be honest, I don't really understand people who get on top of cars and jump on them, and... well, I won't even comment on the going into a restaurant in a dress and a wig business. ;) I'm not a spur-of-the-moment sort of person; I'm more of a deliberate-about-things-for-a-few-hours-and-then-decide-not-to-do-them-at-all sort of person, I think. ;) But it takes all sorts. Good luck with the wackiness and craziness and everything. :) -- Oliver P. 23:25 May 6, 2003 (UTC)

hmm... can't figure out your reason for reverting User talk:Oliver Pereira/and0rod... enlighten me? Martin

It's in my user space now. Hands off. :P No, but seriously, I can't work out your reasons for making your changes in the first place. I'm actually in the middle of writing a lovely long rant about your "anonymisations" for you on your talk page, but I'm getting a bit of writer's block in chapter 17. You can look forward to reading it when it's finished. ;) -- Oliver P. 00:11 May 7, 2003 (UTC)
 :)
Moved your "lovely long rant", plus my response, to User talk:MyRedDice/refactoring - just FYI.

Zxcvb is the banned user Lir/Vera Cruz. By rights, he shouldn't even have a Talk page to roll back. But as long as he's here, any and all of his edits should be reverted. Jimbo Wales has suggested that he might file charges against him for continuing to come to the site despite having been banned. -- Zoe

I have no interest in your petty squabbles, Zoe. I'm here to build an encyclopaedia. Why don't we all just do that, hmm? -- Oliver P. 07:05 May 11, 2003 (UTC)

NOW HEAR THIS

Now that the vandal horde has established yet another foothold on the wikipedia, soon they will stretch their tentacles past Oliver's talkpage, deep down into the very heart of the wiki, deep down into the depths of an article on 100 best selling ice cream flavours from which they will cause edit wars over whether to include a link to Napoleon (from that delicious tri-flavoured ice cream) and a debacle over whether to refer to ice cream flavours or icecream flavors...oh the psychosis of it all! Zxcvb

See what I mean? -- Zoe

Yup. Am I really the only person that finds this hilariously funny? -- Oliver P. 07:13 May 11, 2003 (UTC)

This is the person who called me a racist because I wouldn't allow him to claim that Christopher Columbus's occupation was a slaver. No, I don't find it funny in the least. -- Zoe

When did I say that? Zxcvb

Did he say that? I don't remember that. My brain is clearly fatigued. I think I've been up too long. I might go to bed now. Have fun, both of you. WikiLove, Oliver P. 07:19 May 11, 2003 (UTC)

Nope, pretty sure it never happaned. Sure wasn't given any chance to defend myself against the phantom allegation 6 months ago. So much for WikiJustice! If you look at the very bottom of [1] (http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Christopher_Columbus/Archived_talk) you can see it stated that this is why I was banned; however, this is the first I've ever heard of it. Dear Ol: Hi1 Thanks for answering my commet. The page you sent me sort of answers it, but for example, a few months ago, when I was new I began the articles on Walter Mercado and Carlos Monzon, which were controversial, as well as John Casablancas. In a list of controversial articles, they could fit. See, Palestine for example, is a controversial issue, but probably not a controversial article...I dont know..lol!

anyways, its always good to hear from you and I hadnt in some time. Please use my talk\page everyoce in a while even if just to say 'hey how's it going?"

thanks and God bless you!!

I'm having some network troubles and can't send e-mail at the moment, so here's my response to your recent message:

I assume it's linked to the problem where people editing after logging out / timing out have their edits _partially_ marked as theirs.
I don't know exactly what the problem is, and I really don't understand how the login system works well enough to tell offhand. :(
But basically, the wiki stores a couple cookies which have your user name and id number. IIRC, these are used just to pre-fill out the login form with your last used username for your convenience, and if you select 'remember my password' it also stores a hash of your password,

and the three bits of information should confirm you and automatically establish a login session. It's the session which actually stores the important information. Maybe. :)

There's presumably something wrong with something such that part of that information is being used as if it were a login session, where it really shouldn't be.
--Brion 12:00 20 May 2003 (UTC)

Ah... Okay, thanks for the reply. Well, it's not really a problem; it was just confusing me a bit. I won't worry about it any further. :) -- Oliver P. 12:12 20 May 2003 (UTC)

Dear Ol: Hi1 Thanks for your remarks on my page. I started a List of toy brands today but I accidentally erased it. I tried to revert but it didnt work. I was wondering if you could help me revert and also add Crayola to educational toys.

Me, terrible day today, my body is down, I only slept from 3 30 am to 7 30 am...my niece's pre school graduation was worth it thru..LOL shes 5 and already feels smart enough to be a wikipedian...actually she is pretty smart, she told me recently that the Olympics are games people play..LOL

enough about my niece. Im proud of her but I wanted to tell you thanks for your words on my talk page! Like I say, you live and you learn at wikipedia. Good thing I found out how to revert otherwise Id been so lost with List of toy brands. Ask Mav, the couple other times it happened to me, I had to ask him for help..LOL

well thanks for everything and God bless you and dont forget to say hi every once in a while!

About the Farnborough defecation depreciated description

I must condemn your recent handling of the Farnborough, Hampshire entry, that you carelessly moderated away. It was a first-hand account of what the place is really like. I should know. I lived there for 6 years. Six wasted years. SIX wasted emaciated unnecessary years of my life, washed down the toilet of Hampshire in one single continuous flush. 192.100.124.218 12:29 28 May 2003 (UTC)

There's some dispute about the value of the discography at Conflict (band). Since you've contributed most of the stuff there, I was wondering if you had also checked the discography. If so, probably best mention it on the talk page or something, so people know not to remove it... -- Oliver P. 00:03 2 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Hi Oliver, I've left the Michael version of the Conflict discography deleted and rebuilt it from scratch, AFAIK it's accurate, although I think incomplete- my knowledge of Conflict isn't as extensive as that of Crass I'm afraid :-) quercus robur 17:53 2 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Re: Autofellatio -- questions directed at me are best left on my talk page, so that I am sure to find them. Pizza Puzzle

Sorry about William Jones. Yes, I suppose you're right about that not being the best way of changing it. I admit I did it consciously, thinking that it was easier than creating a redirect and then having to amend that, but I suppose the edit history should really be with the philologist rather than with the disambiguation page. It's not the first time I've done something like that; I'll think harder about it if I meet the same situation again. Deb 19:02 3 Jun 2003 (UTC)

In mathematics, the word tangent has two distinct, but etymologically related meanings: one in geometry, and one in trigonometry.

Yes! That is the solution! Pizza Puzzle

If F(x) approaches infinity as x approaches c is F(x) truly "limited" to infinity...or is it unbounded? Pizza Puzzle

Was your vertical tangent comment a response to the above? Pizza Puzzle

Well then the question is: is it an "unbounded limit" or "limitless because it is unbounded"? As for your comment on the tangent page, I removed it simply because it gave the impression that someone should refrain from adding the information since it was supposed to be a "takehome exercise". heh Pizza Puzzle

Ah, good point. In that case, you were right to do so. :) (And see Talk:Limit (mathematics).) -- Oliver P. 21:30 3 Jun 2003 (UTC)

I just like variety. I can't stand too much of any word and "the" is a really common word. Pizza Puzzle

Sure, an n-dimension is acceptable - ill change it. Pizza Puzzle

I feel insistent on this point:

  • In the following diagram, a red line is tangent to a black curve at an emphasized point:

When descriping a picture, say of a tank, you describe it, how does one say this, more poetically if you will. You would say, "Now in this picture, a German tank crushes some flowers" as opposed to, "In this picture, the tank crushes the flowers." Unless, you had multiple pictures of the same thing- in which cause you would first use "a" - then switch to "the" once it was introduced. Pizza Puzzle

I would agree with that because the page I have open at the moment says:

  • P.22 - A real-valued function F of a real variable

Two pages later it says:

  • P.25 - A graph of a function

Pizza Puzzle

In any case, should you take issue with my reversions at tangent you should note that in each case the amount of controversial material which is edited decreases; essentially a filtering process. Pizza Puzzle

I definitely agree here. Since it's the only line, and the only curve, "the" makes more sense. Trying to insert poetry into articles about mathematics is likely to be an uphill battle :) -- Wapcaplet 14:07 4 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Well, its certainly not truly "poetry"; how can we say "the line" when we have neither identified the line nor discussed it before. It is "a" line, it is pretty much any line- I suppose its akin to having a picture at Gods where we show "a god" but do not identify what god and thus we can't really say "the god". Pizza Puzzle

Amend: Checking out my old Calculus textbook, it appears that the use of "the" or "a/an" depends on context. For example:
Graph of the six trigonometric functions
The graph of f(x)=x^2
An angle θ
A smooth curve that fits the data of Fig. 3.1.9
So perhaps the use of a in the tangent article is best. Though, I would at least use the word the when referring to the tangent point (since it is the only one) -- Wapcaplet 14:16 4 Jun 2003 (UTC)

"their" tangent point! Pizza Puzzle

I have not seen Amy Stiller's Breast. (Ok, I just wanted to say that out loud). IMDB, though it is not a complete or completely reliable source, is, however, where I think I got this from. It's a short, (insert joke here), and it is on her page. Maybe you missed it because it was (I think confusingly) listed under "Herself - filmography". IMDB also has a page for the film itself: Amy Stiller's Breast (http://us.imdb.com/Details?0299471) -- Someone else 02:19 6 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Do you mean move it to Pandaemonium (movie)? That seems to be the correct spelling according to what I have read. -- Oliver P. 23:02 6 Jun 2003 (UTC)
Yeah. I also responded to your comment on my talk page. --Dante Alighieri 00:41 7 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Thank you for correcting my childish idiocy. Pizza Puzzle

This is correct, no?

  • * As x approaches 0, F(x) = 1 / x² is not approaching a limit as it is unbounded; a function which approaches infinity is not approaching a limit.

Pizza Puzzle 16:15 8 Jun 2003 (UTC)

It's a reasonable approximation to correctness, yes. :) But I expect it could be phrased better. I'll come back to the article later... I was trying to reply at Talk:Limit, but kept getting into edit conflicts... So it looks like my accusation of not understanding the article was in reply to Tarquin, rather than to you. I expect he'll be livid at that; I gather he calls himself a mathematician. ;) -- Oliver P. 16:20 8 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Hello Oliver, Thanks for responding to my 'sort of question' and the advice. Your point it entirely valid and I will modify the article. The snag is that the information is non publishable, it was a personal conversation many years ago with the son or grandson of one of rebels and I cannot now remember his name. But it is a nice story and in some ways very typically New Zild so it would be a pity if it was lost. Maybe I scould add it to the talk page, would that be permissable? So can we just let Michael keep editing the Wikipedia and stop letting all the users revert anything. -- Punk
