Welcomes

Welcome to Wikipedia, Matthew! Nauru rules - too bad the place is desolate after all the phosphate exploitation. --Eloquence

Hello there, welcome to the 'pedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. If you need pointers on how we title pages visit Wikipedia:Naming conventions or how to format them visit our manual of style. If you have any other questions about the project then check out Wikipedia:Help or add a question to the Village pump. BTW, very nice work with Nauru/Temp. Cheers! --maveric149

meta user account

Matthew, you need to create a user account on meta.wikipedia.org that has a link to your user page here, or else your logo vote won't be counted. AxelBoldt 18:21, 21 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Three bridges picture

Matthew, the photo you uploaded 28th Jan, Image_talk:Three_bridges_station.jpg, appears to have been lost in the server problems around that time (mentioned on the village_pump). You may wish to re-upload this - although apparently these pictures will re-appear eventually. akaDruid 15:49, 18 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Template talk:Europe#Poll: Which items should be listed?

I am confused by your votes to oppose Kazakhstan and Jan Mayen, and support Georgia and Armenia. Could you please explain here? Thank you, Pædia 03:22, 2004 Jun 4 (UTC)

I'm going for the definitions of my copy of Whitaker's Almanack 2004, which chops the world up into continents in quite a sensible way in my opinion. Matthewmayer 17:28, 4 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for explaining so promptly. You may want to read Template talk:Europe#Kazakhstan and Template talk:Europe#Whitaker's Almanack 2004.
What of Jan Mayen? Cheers, Pædia 05:32, 2004 Jun 11 (UTC)

Athena and Phevos

Hello. I was just wondering, where did you get permission to use the images you just added at the Athena and Phevos article? I don't know if you actually read the talk page, or if you checked the history, but those images have legal issues over them. I know those are photos you probably took of the dolls, but they seem pretty positive they don't want any kind of reproduction. I'm not sure if GNU has any effect over this. It would be cool if we could add them to the article, though. I did add an image myself some time ago, but it didn't work out.

I dunno. – Mackeriv 04:12, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)

It's a bit of a weird one isn't it? I can see that we can't just take official artwork directly from the Olympic site, but I thought my own photo of a toy which I bought might be OK? I will post on Talk:2004 Summer Olympics for some more opinions. I reckon the clay doll ought to be fine at least, even if the modern Athena isn't. Matthewmayer 09:34, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Yeah, I really don't know. Perhaps it's okay to post those photos, but since I don't know that much about copyrights, I can't be sure. And yes, I doubt they have any power over the ancient dolls image. But something's for sure. If we are having problems with this, other people in other places are probably having the same issues. No matter what happens here, they'll hardly do anything against it. Someone did send an email asking for permission, but I don't think any action would be taken against those articles. Even if it's considered illegal. – Mackeriv 13:46, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Talk:List of flags by color

Have you yet made any comments on what to do with Yellow/Gold at Talk:List of flags by color?? A discussion is going on there. 66.245.17.89 00:24, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)

ISAs

Hi Matthew, Since you were the last to edit the article I thought I would point out my changes. There were a few imprecise details Particularly the ommision of TOISAs, the defintion of a stocks ans shares ISA, which may also consist partly or entirely of fixed interest securities etc. andthe fact that ISAs are not tax free (with no ACT being available anymore on dividend) and a few other points. Kind regards Dainamo 20:55, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Great work on ISAs, you really fleshed it out. I've corrected some typos and rearranged slightly. I'm also pretty sure minors aren't allowed to hold ISAs. Do you think the last section really belongs in the article? (tracker funds vs managed funds). It's good stuff, but might be better in a different article, as the issue is not only confined to ISAs. Matthewmayer 21:58, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Right about the minors Matthew! It was a freudient slip onm may part as a had just been reading on Stakeholder pensions (another present gov initiative) which can be held from birth. Dainamo 22:04, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I agree it would be better having "tracker argument" elsewhere as soon as an appropriate article is written and just reference to it here (as it relates to the CAT policy) Dainamo 22:09, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Spam

Hi. Yes, I noticed that delightful pattern of adding his own spam to game articles, while removing competitor's links. He first caught my attention by spamming the finance articles. Clearly not a real contributor based on his history. This anon may think he has a "right" to add whatever link he wants, but he is mistaken. I'm quite confident that community consensus would support such spam removal. I'll just revert him for a bit more if he persists, and then ask for an arbcom injunction. The Humungous Image Tagging Project

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Ram-Man&action=edit&section=new)| talk)

Image copyrights

Thanks for uploading Image:PaperWikipediaMockup.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use gfdl if you release it under the GFDL, or fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much, Edwin Stearns | Talk 20:54, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I've found another of your untagged images: Image:Riga riflemen.JPG. I've tagged it as unvierified for now. Same rules as above apply, if you need some help or would like me to tag this image for you, let me know on my talk page! Thanks. Cool Image btw. --MaxPower 15:26, 2005 Jan 11 (UTC)

Chennai tsunami images

If you feel like it, you could release more images under "free licenses" and add them to commons:2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Also [1] (http://www.fantasyfacup.com/matthew/gallery/albums/quake/now_where_did_i_leave_the_car.sized.jpg) seems more indicative of the damage done. If you could "free up" that image at least for the article it'd be nice. -- Paddu 09:34, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

After all the hassle the first picture caused, I have removed the gallery from my website. Matthewmayer 12:13, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)
No problem, thanks for the Images. It can happen to everybody that they do something in the best intentions, and it just goes wrong. (See the fine print at the bottom of User:Chris 73...or maybe better not :) Don't let the critic get you down, and keep up the good work -- Chris 73 Talk 13:29, Dec 27, 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Indian wikipedians' notice board

We now have a Indian wikipedians' notice board that is (contary to its title) also meant for non-Indians living in India or contributing to India-related topics. As you say you are in Chennai I thought you might be interested. -- Paddu 07:30, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)
