Welcome to Wikipedia

Actually, I'm a he. (I understand the reason for the confusion, though -- I don't indicate anything one way or the other on my user page.) Again, welcome to Wikipedia. 'Glad to have you here. In addition to the two links I mentioned at VfD (How to write a great article and Wikipedia:Style and How-to Directory), you might want to check out the excellent tutorial. If you have any questions, you can ask at the help desk or on my talk page. If I don't know the answer, I'll find it for you. Also, if you have some time you would like to devote to exploring the Wikipedia, a good place to start is the Community Portal. 'See you around. SWAdair | Talk 06:10, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Butchart Gardens

Wow! I want to see that place. I love the article, but I think the History section is still too close to the base (copyrighted) material [1] (http://www.butchartgardens.com/history/). You've done a decent job of trying to rephrase things, but I think some more paraphrasing would help. The most effective way I've found to do that is to take one paragraph at a time and write down the essential points of the paragraph but not in sentence form. Jot down notes that are no more than five words per idea, and be sure to only use words that you would actually use.

For example, in the original text, take the sentence "From farmland nearby she requisitioned tons of top soil, had it brought to Tod Inlet by horse and cart, and used it to line the floor of the abandoned quarry." I would jot down "farmland tons topsoil horse/cart." Since the word "requisitioned" is not part of my normal vocabulary, I would be sure I did not write that one down. Once you've made short notes capturing the essence of the text, put it away for a day and don't read the article or the notes. Come back a day later and rewrite it, using only your notes. This way you put it in your own words and avoid the temptation to use the more "polished" terms and phrasing from the original.

I think you chose a wonderful topic for an article, and enriched my world because of it. Thank you for that. A little more work, to get further from the base copyrighted text, and I think you'll have a great article. SWAdair | Talk 07:36, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Marlowe, I just wanted to let you know I reverted your talk page after an anonymous user posted a personal attack. I normally don't remove anything from another user's talk page, but I didn't think you would mind. I'm leaving this note only because it is such a highly unusual thing for me to revert another user's talk page. I hope you don't mind. SWAdair | Talk 04:35, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Hey, guy. Sorry about the misunderstanding re. that cellphone article. Here's what I left on my own talk page:

Sure thing. It didn't come off as an encyclopedia article and looked as if it was copied from an owner's manual, especially since it was an anonymous entry. If it's an original work, I can easily remove the copyvio notice and restore the article. It's going to need wikilinks and a bit more "meat" beyond the specs, so odds are good that someone might list it for cleanup. I'll take it off the copyvio page right now. Thanks for letting me know! - Lucky 6.9 04:49, 19 Jun 2004 (UTC)
