The most complete story of the Anti-Imperialist League is in Daniel B. Schirmer, Republic or Empire: American Resistance to the Philippine War, (Schenkman Publishing, Cambridge, MA, 1972). Also useful is Richard E. Welch, Jr. Response to Imperialism: The United States and the Philippine-American War, 1899-1902 (University of North Carolina Press, 1979). The Anti-Imperialist League was founded in June, 1898 to fight U.S. occupation and intended annexation of Cuba, the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico. At its' apex it claimed over 30,000 members. Many prominent Americans served key roles in the organization. William Jennings Bryan and Mark Twain were charter members. Twain also served as vice president along with William Dean Howells. Other well known members include tycoon Andrew Carnegie, William James, William Graham Sumner and William Dean Howells. Following the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1899, which ratified the acquisition of the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico, although not Cuba, the League began to decline and eventually disappeared.
