The basics
I'm Derek Williams, a 24-year-old Wikipedian.
My areas of expertise include algebraic number theory, public-key cryptography, and poker. I started and organized the PlanetMath Exchange and authored CryptoDerk's Vandal Fighter.

Education
I grew up in Oldham County, Kentucky and later moved to Louisville, Kentucky where I earned B.Sc. and M.Eng. degrees in Computer Engineering and Computer Science, both with highest honors, from the University of Louisville's J.B. Speed School of Engineering. My masters research thesis was titled An Open Source Software Library for the Generation of and Arithmetic on Hyperelliptic Curves.
While getting my two degrees at the University of Louisville I worked for the United States Navy. I wrote code involved with the MK-34 Gun Weapon System on board cruisers and destroyers.
Towards the end of my undergraduate and during my first graduate degree I taught calculus 2 twice, calculus 3 once, C programming five times, and java once. Most of my old teaching materials, including a book I wrote, are available on my website (http://www.derk.org).
Now I reside in Kitchener, Ontario as a doctoral candidate in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Waterloo.
I am a member of the following professional organizations: ACM, IEEE, IEEE-CS, IACR, CACR, AMS, and MAA. I am a member of the following honor societies: Tau Beta Pi, Golden Key, Upsilon Pi Epsilon, and Pi Mu Epsilon. Additionally, I am a member of Mensa and the "sekret kabal". Missing image

Personal
I am addicted to video games. Long time favorites include Frequency, Amplitude, Ace Combat, SSX Tricky, .hack, Intelligent Qube, and Final Fantasy VI.
I am always listening to music and I have very broad tastes. I mostly listen to 80s, rap/hip-hop, electronic (ambient/trance/downtempo), soundtracks, and video game music. My favorite artists are De La Soul, DMX, Jay-Z, Jean Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk, OutKast, and Thomas Dolby. Others I enjoy are Bassic, Beastie Boys, Cibo Matto, Daft Punk, Drunken Tiger, Earth, Wind & Fire, Ennio Morricone, Freezepop, Groove Armada, Invisibl Skratch Piklz, Jadakiss, The Notorious B.I.G., and Puff Daddy.
Some of my favorite DVDs include The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, The Godfather, The Seven Samurai, Family Guy, and Corner Gas. Some DVDs I enjoy because they're inadvertently funny are Street Fighter, Bloodsport, Rocky IV, and Thunder Ninja Kids: Little Kickboxer.
