University Heights is a city located in Johnson County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 987. It is completely surrounded by Iowa City and located near the campus of the University of Iowa. It is known locally for its speed trap; a joke at the Johnson County courthouse runs that if the speed limit on this community's sloping main throughfare were raised by 5 mph, 75% of its police force would be out of work. University Heights is very close to the University of Iowa football stadium; some residents rent out parking spaces on their driveways or lawns during home games.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 987 people, 467 households, and 254 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,411.4/km² (3,626.3/mi²). There are 477 housing units at an average density of 682.1/km² (1,752.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.95% White, 0.91% African American, 0.00% Native American, 1.22% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 1.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 467 households out of which 22.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.9% are married couples living together, 4.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.6% are non-families. 35.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.11 and the average family size is 2.74.
In the city the population is spread out with 18.1% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 36.1% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 101.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $48,929, and the median income for a family is $79,044. Males have a median income of $48,542 versus $36,397 for females. The per capita income for the city is $32,484. 11.1% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.0% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
