Tysons Corner Center

Tysons Corner Center, located in Tysons Corner, Virginia opened to the public in 1968, becoming one of the first fully enclosed, climate controlled shopping centers in the Greater Washington Area. It was also one of the first super-regional malls in the country, drawing customers from a multi-state area. The success of Tysons Corner Center had served as a model for similar malls around the country. Presently, the department store anchors are Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Hecht's and Lord & Taylor. It is the largest mall in the capital area and the 10th largest in the United States.
Soon after Tysons Corner Center was constructed, the land surrounding the area - which had previously consisted of farms, auto dealers, and rural residences - became prime real estate, prompting the construction of hotels, office buildings, and apartment complexes.
Originally, the mall consisted of 1.2 million square feet (110,000 m²), with one level, three department stores (Hecht's, Lansburgh's, and Woodward & Lothrop), two movie theaters, and 100 specialty stores. Today, after a $165 million renovation which was completed in 1988, Tysons Corner Center occupies 2.1 million square feet (200,000 m²), has two levels, five department stores, more than 250 stores, restaurants, and eateries.
Wilmorite Properties, Inc., owner and manager of Tysons Corner Center, has begun the initial phase of construction that will add another three-story building beside the former JCPenney structure and an additional parking terrace. Scheduled to open in August 2005, the expanded wing at Tysons will feature a 16-screen AMC movie theater with stadium seating, five fine-dining restaurants, a 10-unit food court, a children's play area, and 30 upscale retailers.
