Tolland is a town located in Connecticut. It is the capitol of Tolland County, Connecticut, though county-level government is of little relevance in the state. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 13,146.
Tolland was named in May, 1715, and incorporated in May, 1722. Allegedly, the town derives its name from being a toll station on the old road between Boston and New York. There is also a Tolland in Somerset, England. Today Interstate 84, the main highway between Hartford, Connecticut and Boston, Massachusetts, traverses Tolland, but town retains a charming village feel. Tolland Green is the informal center of the community, and a national historic district. One will find a candy store, an Arts Center, 'Old Jail' museum, the 'Tolland Inn' bed and breakfast are adjacent to the Green. The white steeples of churches, and the colonial architectural styles on display, are reminiscent of a picture-postcard New England scene, most appreciated during the fall foliage season in October.
Most of the town's adults work either 25 minutes away in Hartford, often at one of the city's many insurance companies, or for the neighbouring University of Connecticut in Storrs. A family-oriented town, the landscape of Tolland is primarily composed of large houses on expansive plots of around one acre. Undeveloped, forested land covers gentle slopes between the town's many residential developments. Along with the two state forests and municipal parks, the town has a relatively rustic, rural character.
Tolland hosts an excellent education system, and is currently constructing a new High School. The town is also expanding with new commercial and residential developments.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 104.4 km² (40.3 mi²). 102.8 km² (39.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.46% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,146 people, 4,586 households, and 3,788 families residing in the town. The population density is 127.8/km² (331.0/mi²). There are 4,665 housing units at an average density of 45.4/km² (117.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.76% White, 0.77% African American, 0.08% Native American, 1.19% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 1.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,586 households out of which 42.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.4% are married couples living together, 5.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.4% are non-families. 13.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.83 and the average family size is 3.12.
In the town the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.1 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $77,398, and the median income for a family is $82,990. Males have a median income of $51,659 versus $37,795 for females. The per capita income for the town is $29,892. 2.2% of the population and 1.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.9% of those under the age of 18 and 3.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
