Mansfield is a town located in Tolland County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 20,720.
Mansfield was incorporated in October, 1702, from Windham.
The town of Mansfield contains the community of Storrs, which is home to the main campus of the University of Connecticut.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 117.8 km² (45.5 mi²). 115.2 km² (44.5 mi²) of it is land and 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.26% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,720 people, 5,291 households, and 3,121 families residing in the town. The population density is 179.9/km² (466.0/mi²). There are 5,481 housing units at an average density of 47.6/km² (123.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 83.91% White, 4.87% African American, 0.20% Native American, 7.15% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.88% from other races, and 1.94% from two or more races. 4.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,291 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.0% are non-families. 27.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.92.
The age distribution, heavily influenced by UConn, is 13.3% under the age of 18, 44.8% from 18 to 24, 18.9% from 25 to 44, 14.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $48,888, and the median income for a family is $69,661. Males have a median income of $42,154 versus $32,292 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,094. 14.2% of the population and 4.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.7% of those under the age of 18 and 5.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
