Thornton Township is a township located in the state of Illinois.
Location
Thornton Township, incorporated in 1850, is the largest township in Illinois. It is located immediately south of Chicago, Illinois. The township includes all of the following municipalities: Calumet City, Lansing, and Burnham on the east; Dolton, South Holland, and Harvey in the middle; and Harvey, Phoenix, and Dixmoor on the west. The township also includes portions of Hazel Crest, Markham, Homewood, Glenwood and Riverdale.
The village of South Holland, Illinois serves as the governmental seat of Thornton Township. The township is named after the village of Thornton, Illinois, located in the south central portion of the township. Many parts of the township carry names inspired by the village's name, including the three high schools of Thornton Township District 205: Thornton High School in Harvey, Illinois; Thornwood High School in South Holland, Illinois; and Thornridge High School in Dolton, Illinois.
Population
As of the 1990 census, 175,896 individuals made Thornton Township their home. In general, the overall population has decreased but the percentage of minorities and senior citizens has increased.
