Dolton, Illinois

Dolton is a village located in Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 25,614. The ZIP Code is 60419.

Dolton has two large water towers, visible from Sibley Boulevard and also from Greenwood Avenue. They have wide bases, painted powder blue with the words "DOLTON" on the top.

Dolton is bordered by Chicago to the north, South Holland to the south, Harvey and Riverdale to the west, and Calumet City to the east.

Dolton is the hometown of NFL star Donovan McNabb and Ebert and Roeper star Richard Roeper.

Geography

Dolton is located at 41°37'39" North, 87°35'55" West (41.627509, -87.598512)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 12.1 km² (4.7 mi²). 11.8 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.57% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 25,614 people, 8,512 households, and 6,494 families residing in the village. The population density is 2,173.5/km² (5,627.6/mi²). There are 8,944 housing units at an average density of 759.0/km² (1,965.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 14.33% White, 82.37% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.43% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 3.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,512 households out of which 41.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% are married couples living together, 26.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.7% are non-families. 20.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.98 and the average family size is 3.42.

In the village the population is spread out with 32.0% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 86.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $48,020, and the median income for a family is $52,725. Males have a median income of $38,646 versus $31,773 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,102. 8.4% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.8% of those under the age of 18 and 8.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
