Thief River Falls is a city located in Pennington County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,410. It is the county seat of Pennington County6.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.9 km² (5.0 mi²). 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.21% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,410 people, 3,619 households, and 2,091 families residing in the city. The population density is 679.3/km² (1,760.0/mi²). There are 3,931 housing units at an average density of 317.5/km² (822.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.555% White, 0.27% African American, 0.95% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 1.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,619 households out of which 27.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.2% are non-families. 35.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.84.
In the city the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $30,759, and the median income for a family is $40,908. Males have a median income of $30,332 versus $20,785 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,489. 12.4% of the population and 8.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.3% of those under the age of 18 and 15.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
