Jones was born in Colwyn Bay, Wales, and attended the Royal Grammar School in Guildford, where he was head boy; he graduated from St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. He appeared on At Last the 1948 Show with Michael Palin and John Cleese and wrote for The Frost Report and several other of David Frost's programmes on British television.
He was a member of the team of writers and performers that made Monty Python's Flying Circus. As a Python, Jones is remembered for his roles as middle-aged women and the "man in the street". He co-directed Monty Python and the Holy Grail and directed Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life.
He co-wrote with Michael Palin Ripping Yarns, and wrote the screenplay for Labyrinth (1986). He has also written several books on mediæval history and numerous works for children. He is the director of several movies, including Erik the Viking (1989) and The Wind in the Willows (1996) as well as the Monty Python films mentioned above. Jones is married to Alison Telfer and has two children.
