Teletoon is a cable channel in Canada which exclusively airs animation, not limited by age or nationality. Separate English and French versions of the station are available in different regions of Canada. It has been known as the counterpart of the American Cartoon Network, with which it shares several series, but due to the station's large (and heavily criticized) commitment to offering Canadian programming, they often have trouble effectively marketing foreign content. It has no apparent connection to the television station in France of the same name.
When Teletoon first launched, it had several time blocks devoted to certain content (ie the Retro block shows old cartoons such as The Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show) and showed more mature content as the day progressed, starting with preschool content at 7:00 am, and ending with adult content after midnight, featuring more adult cartoons such as Ĉon Flux and Duckman. However, Teletoon has had a very bad time with content aimed at an older audience since, stemming from the fact that during their first year, they accidently broadcast adult content, including cartoon nudity, during a time normally devoted to preschoolers. The backlash from parental groups resulted in Teletoon cutting back on almost all of their material focused towards teens and adults. They have since been trying to regain that gound, with the creation of the time block The Detour.
Now animated programming targeted towards teen and adult audiences air during The Detour programming block, much of which is in the vein of CN's Adult Swim. However, unlike Adult Swim and despite an strong early commitment to air diverse and international programming and the ability to air a great majority of material uncut, The Detour has failed to incorporate a single anime series, and is continually haunted by never ending reruns of shows like Undergrads, but they are currently expanding their content, trying to eliminate this problem.
Also of note: in its second year, Teletoon was supposed to air the cult favorite series, Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, and even had the show referenced in many promotional materials. However, despite being printed in television listings for weeks, the show never actually aired on the station. The exact reason for the show's abrupt disappearance is unknown, but apparently it involved a royalty dispute with one of the actors interviewed on the show, which has also caused several episodes to be removed from the DVD release. Teletoon will likely never air the series, but in 2004 they did begin airing its spin-off, The Brak Show.
Ownership of Teletoon is divided between Corus Entertainment (40%), Astral Media (40%) and Cookie Jar Entertainment, formerly CINAR (20%). The name is a portmanteau of television and cartoon.
