Page name

Why can't this entry simply live at Mario? As it is that page redirects here and I can't think of anything else that is only known as "Mario". --mav

We should add in the release dates and systems for the individual games. --LGagnon

If you want to be technically correct, his full name is Mario Mario. Luigi's full name is Luigi Mario. They are the "Mario" brothers. →Raul654 02:40, Feb 22, 2004 (UTC)

They need to put more info on Mario, instead of his games!

Mario Segali

It says that Mario Segali was the warehouse manager. I always thought he was their landlord, though. I don't want to add false information to the article, though. Am I right?

A lot of early gaming history is clouded in such confusion. It might well be that someone from Nintendo said one thing, and someone else said another. Or maybe he was the landlord of the warehouse? ;) ~ FriedMilk 14:06, 16 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Mario Mario

Will people stop changing Mario's name? His full title is Mario Mario, not just 'Mario'. -- Kwekubo 21:10, 20 Apr 2004 (UTC)

He's known as Mario or Super Mario and nothing else. Putting "Mario Mario" there would be confusing. His full name being "Mario Mario" is anecdotal. It might be a good idea to spell out the full names for real people, but "Mario Mario" isn't used by anybody, not even a birth record. Fredrik 21:22, 20 Apr 2004 (UTC)
By the way, it has only been used in the movie. Some people would probably not consider secondary products to bear more weight than the average fan fiction. I personally don't. Fredrik 21:27, 20 Apr 2004 (UTC)
As far as I know, the name "Mario Mario" has never been used in any of the games, which are Mario's main medium. "Mario Mario" seems to be given as much attention from Nintendo as the movie premise that Koopas are humanoids who evolved from dinosaurs... ~ FriedMilk 12:24, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)
His full name has been referred to as Mario Mario on more than one occasion by Nintendo Official Magazine UK. I think most sources would recognise it as a valid bit of Mario trivia, so it merits inclusion. -- Kwekubo 23:29, 15 May 2004 (UTC)
Well, if there's no reaction by this stage, I guess it's safe to reinsert. -- Kwekubo 23:48, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Quite frankly, I think that their should be a page for all Mario characters - the good (Mario, Luigi, Toad, etc.), the bad (Bowser, Wart, Kamek, etc.) and the mindless (goombas, troopas, prana palnts, etc.). And, also, the names Mario Mario and Luigi Mario have been confermed by the guy who created Mario (his name, I dont know!).

Mario is an Italian-American man, born in the Mushroom Kingdom, and raised in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States.

Okay, I know that that Yoshi's Island game says that he was born in the Mushroom Kingdom, but which game says that he's Italian American or where he was raised?

Actually, he's an Italian-American man, raised in the Mushroom Kingdom, and born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States. That was confermed by Nintendo. And, by the way, the games give you millions of different stories because there is no continuing storyline bridging each Mario game.

Games missing from the list

There are almost all games featuring Mario in the list, but what about the Gameboy games "Mario & Yoshi" (kind of Tetris) and "Tennis" (Mario is also the referee in the GB-version) ?

--217.232.1.229 18:25, 7 May 2004 (UTC)

Feel free to add them :) Fredrik 18:35, 7 May 2004 (UTC)

Alright, but I don't know exactly when they were released. "Mario Paint"(SNES) is also missing, but I'm sure it was released within the 90s. The "Game and watch Gallery"-Games for Gameboy also feature Mario.

I will improve the German Mario article first.

The Mario Segali story

What is the source for this? I've been able to find very little about it on the web. Unless it can be attributed to a reliable source, it should be removed. Fredrik 23:35, 14 May 2004 (UTC)

Check out the book "Game over: How Nintendo Zapped an American Industry, Captured Your Dollars, & Enslaved Your Children." It has the Mario Segali story as well as a lot of useful Nintendo information.
This suggestion as to Mario's name is particularly widely referenced. I have seen it in Nintendo publictions, and an internet search reveals this IGN article (http://ign64.ign.com/articles/060/060310p1.html) as an example. -- Kwekubo 23:48, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)

This is true. Even on the official European Nintendo Sites (http://www.nintendo-europe.com/NOE/en/GB/corporate/index.jsp) (the link leads to the English one) the name is explained this way. --Luigi 09:11, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)

See Nintendoland (http://www.nintendoland.com/home).

Better games overview

I think we could improve this article by moving the full list of games to a List of Mario games and mentioning only the most important ones here. We could then have a fairly lengthy description (1-2 paragraphs) about each game mentioned here, including how it furthered gaming. The list of games here could be split into the main series of platform games (SMB1-3, SMW, Yoshi's Island, SM64, Sunshine), and some of the more important spin-off type games (Super Mario Kart, etc).

Thoughts? Fredrik (talk) 14:55, 5 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I think the list should include only those games released on Nintendo consoles and arcade, but not the unimportant and probably unlicensed computer-versions of Mario Bros.

--Luigi 20:01, 5 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I second this. A good "important" list would probably also only include games where Mario is either a playable character or the gameplay revolves around him. Donkey Kong, all of the Super Mario Brothers/Land/World games, Mario 64, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine, maybe Mario 128 [1] (http://cube.ign.com/objects/014/014915.html?fromint=1), etc. - Plutor 16:45, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Er, you guys all seemed to second this "movement" so I did it anyway. Those who didn't agree (in a teeny-tiny voice) please don't hurt me. --Wack'd About Wiki 09:18, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

Image:Supermario.jpg copyright

I've listed Supermario.jpg on Wikipedia:Copyright problems. If any of you have reasons why it shouldn't be replaced with a screenshot post it there. - DropDeadGorgias (talk) 17:49, Jun 17, 2004 (UTC)

What about the CD-i game "Hotel Mario"? If even the PC edutainment titles are listed up, why not also this CD-i game? --Luigi 14:08, 15 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I noticed that there is only seldom a reaction in this dicussion about what someone proposes or asks. That's weird... What about Mario's voice, Charles Martinet? --Luigi 07:27, 19 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I think Mario does not appear in Wario's Woods. --Luigi 15:52, 3 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Gamelist

When was "3D Hot Rally" released? According to the "Monster"-Trophy (SSBM) it was also a game featuring Mario.

--Luigi 19:41, 22 May 2004 (UTC)

The Gamelist is still not complete. There are

  • the Mario Artist series (64DD)
  • Mario teaches Typing 2
  • Hotel Mario

And I Think h does not appear in Wario's Woods. --Luigi 07:49, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Clarifications for a great article

"According to some American manuals and gameplay, Mario and his brother are Italian-Americans born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City."

First, what American manuals say this? Second, "City" should be removed. (Whoops!)

Well I belive this is safe to remove... the manuals for SMB1-3 do not mention this... the only other manuals to check are the arcade manual (if there is one), and any Donkey Kong manual...

I think I'd rewrite this some: "The game known in America as 'Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island,' in which the Yoshi clan deliver Mario and Luigi to their parents after the stork was unable to, makes clear that Mario and Luigi's home since birth (as it were) is the Mushroom Kingdom. They speak with Italian accents, but there has never been any canonical material that indicated that they actually are Italian. Some unofficial sources -- mainly the various animated series and the non-animated 1993 film (see below) -- claim that the brothers have lived in and were possibly reared in Brooklyn, New York. Nothing canonical has ever confirmed this, however."

"He is said to be a plumber (though he has held several other blue-collar jobs in his lifetime) and wears a red shirt, cap, and blue overalls." It might be nice to mention the other colors he's worn, from the brown and red in the original SMB, to the red overalls and blue shirt in the cartoons.

Can we get a better picture of Mario?

What games have had multiple endings?

It's not called a "Power mushroom": it's the "Super Mushroom," which usually makes him larger, but has served many other purposes, too. It often represents a boost in power or speed or somesuch. Should we at least mention the Fire Flower and Starman (which in recent years has also been known as the Super Star, I believe). More information about Japanese differences and info might be cool.

Also, yes, the person who does the voice of Mario and Luigi (and others!) should be mentioned. Great article we've got here. I signed up for a Wikipedia account solely for this article.

Can we get a better picture of Mario?
We used to have a CGI image from Super Mario 64's promotional materials, but it got a copyright notice. We can use screenshots under fair use, so if you can take a shot of him while playing one of the later, more graphically detailed games, be our guest. I think this one is rather good, myself. ~ FriedMilk 03:28, 2004 Sep 2 (UTC)

Mario Mario

The thing is, the Super Mario Bros. Movie couldn't have come up with the title, unless Dr. Mario didn't have his last name as Mario, because Dr. Mario came out in 1990.

I think the Dr. was added nonwithstanding the last name. See also Dr. Wario in Wario Ware. Andre (talk) 22:51, Dec 13, 2004 (UTC)

Well, two things are that:

  • A. Dr. Wario is merely a spoof
  • And B. I gave the benefit of the doubt that Dr. Mario is just to have similarity to the Mario franchise as much as I give the benefit of the doubt that Dr. Mario came up with the idea that his last name is Mario, and giving the doubt that SMB Movie gave the last name. Of course, I hate the SMB movie. *Shrugs* - A Link to the Past

Mario Mario and Luigi Mario have been confermed to be the Mario Bros. fulll names by Shigeru Miyamoto, the guy who created Mario and all the games Mario & friends were ever in. --Wack'd About Wiki 09:32, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

  • P.S.: "Doctor" is the only title in which it is okay if your first name fallows instead of your last.
  • Example: Both "Dr. Adam" and "Dr. West" would be appropreate to call a doctor named Adam West.
  • P.S.S.: I know, Adam West is from The Fairly OddParents, but it was the first name that came to mind (I saw "Catman Meets the Crimson Chin" recently)!

1 Vs 3 Minigame Tree

I came across 1 Vs 3 Minigame Tree and wanted to mention it here so it might get the attention of someone who knows the subject. Is there an appropriate place to merge this information, or at least somewhere we could link to it? As it stands now, the article is an orphan. SWAdair | Talk 06:40, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Mario's 3D debut

...made him the very first 2D established video game character to appear in a full 3D game.

Duke Nukem 3D was also released in 1996 but I don't know if that was before Mario 64 came out. Some websites suggests it was available in January.R4p70r 02:42, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Duke Nukem 3D was released around Super Bowl Sunday 1996, but he was a computer game character. Also, it wasn't a full 3D game - All the characters were still 2D sprites. "full 3D game" was a carefully chosen phrase there, I think. --Golbez 02:47, Apr 1, 2005 (UTC)

Mascot change?

While Mario had been the official mascot of Nintendo for many years, Hiroshi Yamauchi replaced with with Pikachu during late 1997.

I've removed this from the article pending proof of the statement's validity. -Luigi2 21:01, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)
