St. Armand, New York

St. Armand is a town located in Essex County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,321.

The Town of St. Armand is in the northeastern part of the county.

History

The town was set off from the Town of Wilmington in the year 1844.

Geography

The northern and eastern town lines are the border of Franklin County, New York. The town is in the Adirondack State Park.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 148.8 km² (57.4 mi²). 146.4 km² (56.5 mi²) of it is land and 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.57% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,321 people, 543 households, and 349 families residing in the town. The population density is 9.0/km² (23.4/mi²). There are 689 housing units at an average density of 4.7/km² (12.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.43% White, 0.38% African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 543 households out of which 32.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% are non-families. 28.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,500, and the median income for a family is $51,250. Males have a median income of $36,696 versus $23,828 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,828. 8.1% of the population and 4.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.6% of those under the age of 18 and 11.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
