South Valley, New York

South Valley is a town located in Cattaraugus County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 302.

The Town of South Valley is in the southwest corner of the county.

History

The town was first settled in 1798 by Quaker missionaries, who attempted to teach the local indians agriculture and "civilization." The Quakers started a school in 1803 and erected a sawmill in 1812, but the mill caused dissention in the tribe and was pulled down. In 1838 the Quakers helped the Indians from losing their property to a land company. The Town of South Valley was incorporated in 1847.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 96.1 km² (37.1 mi²). 95.6 km² (36.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.46% water.

The south town line is the border of Pennsylvania and the west town line is the border of Chautauqua County, New York.

The Allegheny River forms a reservoir in the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 302 people, 126 households, and 89 families residing in the town. The population density is 3.2/km² (8.2/mi²). There are 320 housing units at an average density of 3.3/km² (8.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.01% White, 0.33% African American, 1.32% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 126 households out of which 22.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% are married couples living together, 5.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 25.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the town the population is spread out with 20.5% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 34.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 125.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 122.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,750, and the median income for a family is $47,188. Males have a median income of $32,188 versus $22,188 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,541. 6.4% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.0% of those under the age of 18 and 10.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • There are no significant communities in the Town of South Valley.
  • Allegany Reservation -- A reservation of the Iroquois that forms part of the east border of the town, along the reservoir.
  • Allegheny Reservoir -- The reservoir lake in the southeast cuts off part of the town.
  • Sawmill Run -- A stream that flows eastward into the Allegheny Reservoir, formed by the junction of its North Branch and South Branch near Route 89. The town government offices are located near this junction.

Adjacent towns and areas

The south town line is the border of Warren County, Pennsylvania, and the west town line is the border of the Town of Carroll in Chautauqua County, New York. To the east is Allegany Reservation and the Town of Cold Spring. North of South Valley is the Town of Randolph.
