Somnath Chatterjee

Somnath Chatterjee (born July 25, 1929 in Tezpur, Assam) is a politician in India. He is currently the Speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha (House of the people). He is from the CPI (M) (Communist Party of India (Marxist)). He joined the party in 1968, was given a ticket to fight elections to the Lok Sabha in 1971 and was elected the very first time. Subsequently he was re-elected 9 times and is a member of Parliament for the 10th time. In the 10th Lok Sabha he was elected leader of his party. In 1996 he won the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award.
He was educated at Calcutta University in Calcutta. He also attended Cambridge University. He has also studied economics at the University of Glasgow.
Personal life
The father of Somnath Chatterjee, N.C. Chatterjee, was the president of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha.
In 1950, he married Renu Chatterjee and has one son, Pratap Chatterjee, and 2 daughters.
