Sherman is a town located in Chautauqua County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,553.
The Town of Sherman, incorporated in 1924. Sherman is also the name of a village within this town. Sherman is an interior town in the county, west of Chautauqua Lake.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.2 km² (36.4 mi²). 94.0 km² (36.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.25% water.
The Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 and New York 17) passes across the north part of the town.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,553 people, 546 households, and 400 families residing in the town. The population density is 16.5/km² (42.8/mi²). There are 631 housing units at an average density of 6.7/km² (17.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.88% White, 0.32% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 0.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 546 households out of which 40.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. 22.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.36.
In the town the population is spread out with 32.1% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who are 65 years of age or older.
