Scimitar medium fighter

The fictional F-32 Scimitar medium fighter is a starfighter in the Wing Commander universe. In service since the early 26th century, it is, by 2654, the oldest front-line ship in the Confederation Fleet. Relative to other fighters in the Confederation Space Force, the Scimitar has rougher, more sluggish handling and mediocre armament; its mass drivers, while having a relatively heavy punch, require a closer approach to the enemy than lasers would, and are more susceptible to damage. Fortunately, the Scimitar has very heavy shields and tough armor. Unfortunately, its missile loadout is unspectacular (consisting of two Dart DF and three Javelin HS missiles).
The designation F-105 belongs to the MUCH later F/A-105 Tigershark multirole fighter. The Scimitar is referred to in the Wing Commander movie continuity as the CF-105.
The Scimitar is being phased out of frontline squadrons in 2654; by 2655 it is completely withdrawn from Confederation service, replaced by the more nimble and heavier-hitting Rapier II.
The Scimitar shares its name with the Supermarine Scimitar, a Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm fighter that saw service in limited quantities.
A Scimitar is a type of curved sword of Middle Eastern origin, best suited for slashing attacks instead of a pitched melée.
