Richford, New York

Richford is a town located in Tioga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,170. The town is named after Ezekial Rich, an early settler and benefactor of the town.

The Town of Richford is the most northerly town of the county.

History

Settlement began around 1808. The town was first formed from the Town of Berkshire as the "Town of Arlington" in 1831. In 1832 it changed its name to the Town of Richford.

John D. Rockefeller was born in this town.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 98.9 km² (38.2 mi²). 98.9 km² (38.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.05% water.

The West Branch of the Owego Creek forms part of the western boundary, which is the border of Tompkins County, New York. The north border is Cortland County, and the east border is Broome County.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,170 people, 440 households, and 315 families residing in the town. The population density is 11.8/km² (30.7/mi²). There are 502 housing units at an average density of 5.1/km² (13.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.89% White, 0.17% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 440 households out of which 34.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.4% are non-families. 22.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $34,130, and the median income for a family is $38,750. Males have a median income of $28,661 versus $23,667 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,331. 13.8% of the population and 12.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • East Richford -- A location on Route 79 (Catskill Turnpike), east of Richford village.
  • Richford -- A hamlet at the junction of Routes 38 and 79 in the southwest part of the town.
