Redbird is the name given to New York City Subway trains that were originally a light blue but were painted deep red between 1986 and 1989 to combat graffiti. They are known as the R26, R28, R29, R33 and R36 model cars. They have run on the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
Most Redbirds have been phased out between 2000-2004 by the new R142 and R142A IRT cars. Some 1,100 Redbirds have been buried at sea off Delaware, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and New Jersey as artificial reef to promote marine life and to serve as a barrier and for diving.
