RAF Tornado F2

The Tornado F2 was the abortive first generation of the air superiority version (ADV) of the Panavia Tornado in Royal Air Force service. Only 18 were ever produced, as serious problems were discovered with the radar for the aircraft. They proved so bad that the radomes of the aircraft were actually filled with concrete and lead ballast as an interim measure until they could be upgraded to the newer F3 standard. The concrete radar was nicknamed Blue Circle, in line with British radar nomenclature and a play on the fact that a British cement and concrete firm is also named Blue Circle.
The F2 was introduced into service in 1984 and its short career came to an end four years later when the new F3s came into the RAF. Some F2 airframes were later updated to F3 standard as attrition replacements.
