Pulteney, New York

Pulteney is a town located in Steuben County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,405. The name is derived from the name of the original pioneer tract of land.
The Town of Pulteney is in the northeast part of the county.

History
The town was formed in 1808 from the Town of Bath. The first settlers arrived around 1800.
The "Pulteney Purchase" or "Pulteney Tract" was a section of land in the region of Steuben County purchased by several English investors.
Geography
The town is on the west side of Keuka Lake. The north and east town lines are the border of Yates County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.3 km² (36.4 mi²). 86.1 km² (33.2 mi²) of it is land and 8.3 km² (3.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.76% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,405 people, 566 households, and 400 families residing in the town. The population density is 16.3/km² (42.3/mi²). There are 1,118 housing units at an average density of 13.0/km² (33.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.65% White, 0.50% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 1.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 566 households out of which 28.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% are non-families. 23.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.90.
In the town the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 29.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 104.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $37,115, and the median income for a family is $42,438. Males have a median income of $27,026 versus $21,106 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,461. 9.7% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.3% of those under the age of 18 and 4.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
