Portage Lake is a town located in Aroostook County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 390.

Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 89.4 km² (34.5 mi²). 79.6 km² (30.7 mi²) of it is land and 9.8 km² (3.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.01% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 390 people, 183 households, and 116 families residing in the town. The population density is 4.9/km² (12.7/mi²). There are 485 housing units at an average density of 6.1/km² (15.8/mi²). History
The name of the city was borrowed from the name of the lake that occupies much of the center of town. The word portage comes from French and means "to carry". The town was first settled in 1844 by lumbermen from Canada. In 1872, the settlement was organized as a plantation and in 1909 it was incoporated as a town.
