Portage is a city in Kalamazoo County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 44,897.
Portage is adjacent to the southern boundary of Kalamazoo. The city was incorporated from the entirety of the former Portage Township on December 31, 1963.
There are three public high schools in Portage, Portage Central, Portage Northern, and a Community High School. The pharmaceutical company Pfizer is also located there; which in recent years has caused much controversy due to layoffs.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 90.7 km² (35.0 mi²). 83.4 km² (32.2 mi²) of it is land and 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.05% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 44,897 people, 18,138 households, and 12,134 families residing in the city. The population density is 538.3/km² (1,394.2/mi²). There are 18,880 housing units at an average density of 226.4/km² (586.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.75% White, 3.73% African American, 0.30% Native American, 2.64% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 1.84% from two or more races. 1.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 18,138 households out of which 34.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% are non-families. 27.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.01.
In the city the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $49,410, and the median income for a family is $61,285. Males have a median income of $42,377 versus $29,399 for females. The per capita income for the city is $25,414. 4.8% of the population and 3.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.9% of those under the age of 18 and 4.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
