Pooler, Georgia

Pooler is a city located in Chatham County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,239.

Pooler is now a fast-growing suburb of Savannah, Georgia, located west of the city, near Interstate 95. During the Civil War, Pooler was a railway stop called Pooler's Station—the last stop before Savannah on the Central of Georgia Railroad. In December 1864, it was a meeting place for Union officers led by William Tecumseh Sherman, who negotiated with Savannah authorities for the strategic port city's peaceful surrender.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 74.7 km² (28.8 mi²). 74.2 km² (28.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.66% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 6,239 people, 2,245 households, and 1,793 families residing in the city. The population density is 84.1/km² (217.8/mi²). There are 2,356 housing units at an average density of 31.8/km² (82.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.75% White, 7.85% African American, 0.18% Native American, 2.07% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 1.80% from two or more races. 1.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,245 households out of which 40.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.1% are non-families. 16.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $47,202, and the median income for a family is $50,067. Males have a median income of $41,947 versus $29,851 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,759. 8.3% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.2% of those under the age of 18 and 15.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
