Pine Island is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,337. Most of Pine Island is located in Goodhue County, Minnesota, but a small part extends into Olmsted County.
The community has a strong agricultural base, but has been transitioning over time into a bedroom community for nearby Rochester which employs many local residents.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.6 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.6 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.68% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,337 people, 864 households, and 628 families residing in the city. The population density is 308.0/km² (797.5/mi²). There are 890 housing units at an average density of 117.3/km² (303.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.99% White, 0.13% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 0.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 864 households out of which 39.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% are non-families. 23.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.06.
In the city the population is spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.1 males.
