Peninsula Township, Michigan

Peninsula Township is a township in Grand Traverse County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 5,265. The township is coterminous with the Old Mission Peninsula, which projects into Grand Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan. The Old Mission Point Lighthouse is located at the northern end of the peninsula.

Communities
- Old Mission is an unincorporated community in the township near the end of the peninsula on the east arm of the bay at Template:Coor dms.
- Mapleton is an unincorporated community in the township on Michigan State Highway 37 about midway on the peninsula at Template:Coor dms.
- The southern part of the township is adjacent to Traverse City and is consider part of its urban area.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 82.5 km² (31.8 mi²). 72.2 km² (27.9 mi²) of it is land and 10.3 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 12.50% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,265 people, 2,131 households, and 1,625 families residing in the township. The population density is 73.0/km² (189.0/mi²). There are 2,613 housing units at an average density of 36.2/km² (93.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.28% White, 0.06% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.97% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 2.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,131 households out of which 27.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.4% are married couples living together, 4.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.7% are non-families. 20.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.84.
In the township the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 19.3% from 25 to 44, 33.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.9 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $66,019, and the median income for a family is $82,426. Males have a median income of $52,750 versus $34,620 for females. The per capita income for the township is $40,753. 2.3% of the population and 1.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.3% of those under the age of 18 and 2.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
