Ostankino Tower, also called the Moscow Beauty, is a free-standing television and radio tower in Moscow, originally 540 m (1772 ft) in height, designed by Nikolai Nikitin. Its construction began in 1963 and was completed in 1967. It held the record for the tallest free-standing structure in the world for a decade, until the CN Tower was built in Toronto, Canada. It remained the highest freestanding structure in Eurasia.
It caught fire on 27 August 2000 with the loss of three lives and serious structural damage. Massive reconstruction ensued. As part of the process, in 2003, the Ostankino Tower's new pinnacle raised its height to 577.44 metres (1894 ft), making it once again the tallest free-standing structure on land in the world. The reconstruction was completed and the tower reopened in 2004.
It is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers.
