North Hempstead is a town located in Nassau County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 222,611.
The Town of North Hempstead occupies the northwest part of the county.

Geography
The west town line is the border of Queens County, New York, part of New York City. The north town line, delineated by the Long Island Sound is the border of Bronx County and Westchester County.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 179.0 km² (69.1 mi²). 138.8 km² (53.6 mi²) of it is land and 40.2 km² (15.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 22.47% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 222,611 people, 76,820 households, and 58,460 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,604.2/km² (4,154.9/mi²). There are 78,927 housing units at an average density of 568.8/km² (1,473.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 78.98% White, 6.40% African American, 0.14% Native American, 9.11% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.90% from other races, and 2.45% from two or more races. 9.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 76,820 households out of which 33.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.0% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.9% are non-families. 20.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.27.
In the town the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $81,039, and the median income for a family is $94,156. Males have a median income of $60,094 versus $41,331 for females. The per capita income for the town is $41,621. 4.8% of the population and 3.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
