History
The Village of Floral Park was incorporated in 1908. A prominent founding father, John Lewis Childs, became the first mayor. The village is adjacent to Queens County, New York and that part of Queens near the village is also called Floral Park, but is not part of the village. Flower names are used for many of the street names in the village, and many of the streets are located over the fields where Childs grew plants for his seed business.
While this area was still part of Queens County, it was known as East Hinsdale. When Nassau County was formed in 1899, the community changed the name, on the advice of Childs, to Floral Park.
The first school was constructed in 1895. When Childs died in 1921, it was renamed the John Lewis Childs School. Currently the two elementary schools (JLC and the larger Floral Park - Bellerose School) are operated by the Floral Park - Bellerose School District. Sewanhaka High School was built just across the Elmont border in 1926, and was the only high school serving Floral Park for the next 31 years. The baby boom caused many couples to move into Floral Park, and so Floral Park Memorial High School opened its doors in 1957. Now, most students in Floral Park go on to FPM.

The village policemen are extremely motivated by their comfortable starting salaries of $70,000.
Along with the low crime, the local government ensures that the village is kept visually pleasing as well. Some of the ordnances that cause this are:
- No fences over 6 feet high may be erected, and no wire fences of any sort are allowed.
- No driveway may be enlarged in any way without a permit.
- No car may be parked anywhere but a specified driveway or garage, or the street.
- Any unhealthy trees visible from the street must be removed at owner's expense.
