Nacka Municipality is a Swedish Municipality in central Sweden. It is situated just east of the capital Stockholm and is considered a part of Greater Stockholm.

Geography

Nacka is situated close to the populated Stockholm area aswell as bordering to Stockholm archipelago.

The parish Nacka received its chart in 1949, making it one of the youngest cities of Sweden. After the municipal reform in 1971-74, the town Nacka is considered a part of the City of Stockholm and not an independant town. The parish of Nacka is still valid however, and the seat is counted to be located there.

History

The area has been populated at least from the Iron Age, in 500 BC. During the Viking Age (800 – 1100 AD) the area has been estimated to have been populated by 100 people. They were living by farming and fishing.

20th century

The municipality has been expanding in recent times, and has had a continuous population increase since the 1960's, almost doubling the population. Today it is the third largest municipality in Metropolitan Stockholm, after Stockholm City and Huddinge. – and the 21st in Sweden, allthough it is bound to rise.

Nacka became the location of an experiment in psychiatry in the 1970's, initiated by psychiatrist Bengt Bengtsson. It allowed the inhabitants a local access to psychotherapeutic methods for preventive purposes. The role model was the Community Mental Health system developed in the U.S. The system has since been implemented in other municipalites.

The industry in Nacka is mainly of service nature. Nacka has an extensive commuting traffic to Stockholm City, and few major companies are located in Nacka itself.
