Mount Rainier is a city located in Prince George's County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,498. Bordering Washington, DC, Mount Rainier got its start as a streetcar suburb.

Geography

Mount Rainier is located at 38°56'30" North, 76°57'49" West (38.941594, -76.963696)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,498 people, 3,487 households, and 1,858 families residing in the city. The population density is 5,047.8/km² (13,038.5/mi²). There are 3,756 housing units at an average density of 2,231.1/km² (5,762.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 20.20% White, 62.06% African American, 0.33% Native American, 2.31% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 10.65% from other races, and 4.42% from two or more races. 18.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,487 households out of which 28.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 25.6% are married couples living together, 19.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 46.7% are non-families. 36.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 11.8% from 18 to 24, 37.2% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,920, and the median income for a family is $39,060. Males have a median income of $30,500 versus $27,441 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,558. 13.0% of the population and 9.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.6% of those under the age of 18 and 13.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
