Milwaukie, Oregon

Milwaukie is a city located in Clackamas County, Oregon. It was founded in 1847 as a rival to upriver Oregon City by Lot Whitcomb, who apparently named it for Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,490.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.5 km² (4.8 mi²). 12.5 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.41% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 20,490 people, 8,561 households, and 5,282 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,644.7/km² (4,256.5/mi²). There are 8,988 housing units at an average density of 721.5/km² (1,867.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.96% White, 0.95% African American, 0.94% Native American, 2.36% Asian, 0.25% Pacific Islander, 1.60% from other races, and 2.94% from two or more races. 3.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,561 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.8% are married couples living together, 11.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% are non-families. 30.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.93.
In the city the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $43,635, and the median income for a family is $51,649. Males have a median income of $36,674 versus $29,957 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,342. 7.6% of the population and 6.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
