History

Micanopy claims to be the oldest inland town in Florida. When explorer and naturalist William Bartram visited in 1774, it was the site of a Seminole (tribe) village called Cuscowilla. Batram's favorable writings about this fertile area brought a number of European settlers.

The first post office opened here in 1826; the town was listed as under the name Wanton after resident and promoter Edward M. Wanton, but the name "Micanopy" was already in use, after the name of a Seminole Chief. A fort was established here in 1831, and saw use in the Second Seminole War.

Micanopy's historic district was listed on National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Micanopy has been used as a location for movie filming including the films "Cross Creek" (1983) and "Doc Hollywood" (1991).
