Metro Center is the central hub of the system, located in downtown Washington, D.C., under an area stretching east-west from roughly 11th to 13th Streets Northwest, and from G to H Streets Northwest on a North-South axis, with entrances on G Street at 11th, 12th and 13th Street, and at 12th and F Street. The station is by far the busiest in the system in terms of ridership. The Metro Information Center and Gift Shop are located by the 12th and F Street entrance.
The station is located very close to Gallery Place-Chinatown, such that the lights of one are visible down the tunnel from the other; as such, some have suggested a pedestrian tunnel to connect the two. Metro Center was one of the original Metro stops, and service began on March 27, 1976.
