History
The area was originally settled by English colonists in 1662.
Geography
Mattituck is located at 40°59'41" North, 72°32'14" West (40.994649, -72.537310)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 26.5 km² (10.2 mi²). 22.4 km² (8.6 mi²) of it is land and 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 15.53% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,198 people, 1,651 households, and 1,231 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 187.6/km² (485.7/mi²). There are 2,313 housing units at an average density of 103.4/km² (267.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the hamlet is 96.62% White, 1.17% African American, 0.02% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 2.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,651 households out of which 31.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.4% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.4% are non-families. 21.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.97.
In the community the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.9 males.
The median income for a household in the hamlet is $55,353, and the median income for a family is $63,370. Males have a median income of $42,917 versus $34,813 for females.
