History
The Town of Lyman was incorporated under the name of Coxhall on April 24th, 1780. In 1803, on February 25, the name of the town was changed to Lyman, in honor of Theodore Lyman, Esquire.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 104.7 km² (40.4 mi²). 100.9 km² (38.9 mi²) of it is land and 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.69% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,795 people, 1,366 households, and 1,087 families residing in the town. The population density is 37.6/km² (97.5/mi²). There are 1,749 housing units at an average density of 17.3/km² (44.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.45% White, 0.29% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. 0.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,366 households out of which 37.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.6% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.4% are non-families. 12.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.04.
In the town the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $47,860, and the median income for a family is $53,140. Males have a median income of $37,917 versus $25,192 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,203. 4.3% of the population and 4.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
