Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 72.3 km² (27.9 mi²). 70.6 km² (27.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.40% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,497 people, 996 households, and 682 families residing in the town. The population density is 35.4/km² (91.7/mi²). There are 1,103 housing units at an average density of 15.6/km² (40.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.52% White, 0.24% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 0.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Local Government
Alfred has three selectmen who manage town business. Selectmen are elected in an annual town hall meeting to three years terms. The current selectmen are Earland Morrison, John Sylvester, and Perley Yeaton.
Schools
Alfred's children attending public school go to Alfred Elementary School from kindergarten through sixth grade. Seventh and eigth graders attend Massabesic Junior High School in neighboring Waterboro, Maine. Ninth through twelth graders attend Massabesic High School, also in Waterboro. Elementary aged students may also attend the private Unlimited Vision Montessori School.
