Little Falls, Minnesota

Little Falls is a city located in Morrison County, Minnesota, close to the geographic center of Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,719. It is the county seat of Morrison County6. Little Falls is the location of the boyhood home of Charles Lindbergh. The Charles Lindbergh State Park is situated just across from this home, which now serves as a museum. Little Falls is also home to Pine Grove Park, which contains a zoo on the west side of town.

The town was named after waterfalls that were located on the Mississippi River, which travels through the town. Several attempts to build dams over the falls took place throughout the town's history, some of which powered saw mills in the nineteenth century. Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.5 km² (6.8 mi²). 16.2 km² (6.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.40% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,719 people, 3,197 households, and 1,899 families residing in the city. The population density is 476.1/km² (1,232.5/mi²). There are 3,358 housing units at an average density of 207.1/km² (536.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.21% White, 0.49% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,197 households out of which 29.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.8% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.6% are non-families. 36.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 85.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,547, and the median income for a family is $40,298. Males have a median income of $30,925 versus $22,922 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,924. 15.9% of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.8% of those under the age of 18 and 23.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
